How this guide was built
For ChatGPT Plus and Pro, Kept organized the guide around the billing platform and OpenAI's 24-hour cutoff. We used OpenAI's Canceling your ChatGPT subscription article for every cancel path, timing, refund statements, and troubleshooting.
Cancellation steps
Find out who bills you
OpenAI says to cancel through the platform where you purchased: chatgpt.com, the Apple App Store, or Google Play. Your purchase receipt shows which. A chatgpt.com subscription doesn't appear in Apple or Google Play subscriptions.
On chatgpt.com: Settings → Billing → Cancel
Sign in, open your account menu, select Settings, then Billing. Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.
On Apple: Settings → your name → Subscriptions
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, select your name, then Subscriptions, ChatGPT, and Cancel Subscription. OpenAI notes that if there's no Cancel Subscription and an expiration date shows, it may already be canceled.
On Google Play: Subscriptions → ChatGPT
In the Play Store app, open Subscriptions, select ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription. On the web, open Google Play subscriptions, select Manage next to ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription. Use the Google account that bought it.
Beat the 24-hour cutoff
OpenAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date. If you cancel later than that, the next charge may already have processed.
Check the status on the platform that billed you
OpenAI says to confirm on the billing platform that the subscription is no longer set to renew. Paid features remain until the end of the current period.
Common pitfalls
- Uninstalling the ChatGPT app doesn't cancel the subscription.
- Deleting your ChatGPT account doesn't cancel an Apple App Store subscription. Cancel with Apple first.
- Canceling less than 24 hours before the billing date can mean the next charge already went through.
- Canceling stops renewal but doesn't refund previous charges. Refunds are a separate request.
- Duplicate charges often come from subscriptions under different ChatGPT, Apple, or Google accounts. OpenAI says to check each.
What to capture as proof
- The purchase receipt or billing page showing which platform bills you.
- Settings → Billing (or the Apple/Google subscription page) before canceling, with plan and next billing date.
- The Cancel confirmation and the time you canceled.
- The billing page afterward showing the plan won't renew and when paid features end.
- Any refund request and OpenAI Support or Apple reply.
Frequently asked questions
How do I cancel ChatGPT Plus?
If you subscribed on chatgpt.com, open your account menu → Settings → Billing, and select Cancel under Cancel plan. If you subscribed in the iPhone app, cancel in Apple's Subscriptions. If on Android, cancel in Google Play.
When should I cancel ChatGPT Plus to avoid the next charge?
OpenAI says at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
Will I get a refund if I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

No. OpenAI says uninstalling doesn't cancel, and deleting your ChatGPT account doesn't cancel an Apple App Store subscription.
Why am I being charged twice for ChatGPT?
OpenAI says to check for subscriptions under different ChatGPT, Apple, or Google accounts, then cancel the one you don't want on the platform that bills it.
